Having worked in a local branch of Our Price during the 90s, he found his calling making people's computers work.
What did he choose to keep him company?
1) Mull of Kintyre by Wings
Reminds me of Christmas when i was a kid
2) Senses Working Overtime by XTC
The first single bought. It was out about 1981. I think I had records before that people bought for me, but that was the first time I went in and chose something with my pocket money. The art of browsing in record shops has long gone. I could spend a good hour just browsing the racks. Now I have to make a special effort to listen to a whole album because I know I have 12000 other songs I could listen to at the flick of a button. No emotional investment in albums anymore, reading the sleevenotes, lyrics, producers etc!
3) Fields of Fire by Big Country
My 1st gig. Big Country, Wembley Arena, Christmas 1984. My big brother took me...I was all of 15 years old. I was just overwhelmed. Me and my mates used to go and see bands all round the country. (Can you name a few?) Big Country, The Alarm, Echo & Bunnymen, The Smiths, The Cult, The Cure, U2, Siouxsie & Banshees, Lloyd Cole, Stone Roses, Teenage Fanclub, Wonderstuff, Billy Bragg, Squeeze, Van Morrison, Beautiful South, Suzanne Vega, Wedding Present, Pixies who my favourite ever, Something Happens I saw 3 times on 1 tour,Gene, Therapy, Pogues ...
I am forgetting some now but those are definitely the memorable ones. There are also loads of dodgy indie bands that played locally and gave the record shop free tickets to use.
4) Saturday Boy By Billy Bragg
First time i really loved music and the words that go with it
5) Sheila Take A Bow by The Smiths
It reminds me of 6th form. Our 6th Form Common room was great. It just felt like loads of freedom as teachers didn't go in there, and we only had 1 or 2 lessons a day but we had to attend normal school hours. (Did you dress up like a Smith?) No, I was all U2-ed up with skinny black jeans, Tucka boots and a sleeveless black shirt…yowza! (Do you miss those days?) I do…I really do. I have often thought if I could go back in time to relive anything it would be the 6th Form. Loads of fun, loads of mates, loads of parties, loads of Norfolk Broads. It was "weak dead skill!" although I didn't get the grades I needed to go and do the degree I wanted so maybe I actually ballsed it all up.
6) Fools Gold by The Stone Roses
Wow....the early 90s! The early 90s just had so many great bands, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Primal Scream etc and it seemed to make it to the mainstream, so suddenly all your favourite bands were on TOTP. That had never happened to me before. Plus it was when I was working in the record shop so I felt like I was part of it!
7) Pass It On - The Coral
For some reason we played this loads when Archie was born, so reminds me of him.
8) Loch Lomond by Runrig
My dad, makes him cry (Why?) Scottish people...Loch Lomond…it makes you think of Scottishness – the lochs and the mountains, over-sentimentality, football, sing-alongs. For me it is wanting to go back to a place you never came from in the first place...feeling like you belong mostly which is a large part of why I love going to Scotland games…I just feel like I belong. And mostly with loch lomond, it is the feeling of “going home.”
9) Put A Ring On It by Beyonce
My daughter Izzy (6) loves this
10) Fall On Me by REM
Fall On Me was my go-to track of the 90s (not so much now though)...that is when I knew it would last for me and Julie. We had only been together a couple of months and we went to a record fair. She scooted off somewhere and said she would see me in 5 minutes. She came out 5 minutes later with a ltd radio 12” of Fall On Me to give to me as a pressy.
