Zahra the Research Unit Coordinator

Today I am joined by Zahra, a "26 year old Londoner, Somali Muslim, pizza devourer, Star Wars fan and overall nerdy geek."

1) Read My Mind - The Killers
I am a huge fan of The Killers and I had to forcefully stop myself from making the whole list a dedication to them. Alas, I chose my favourite; the one that Brandon Flowers said was the best song he has ever written. "The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun!" Screw physics, I wholeheartedly agree.

2) Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
This song would be played when I'm climbing the coconut trees on the island. It is one of those rare songs where I literally cannot stop myself from shuffling throughout. I have to make sure I don't include it in my shuffle playlist. Why? Well, I very can't have it playing when I'm in a library, or on the tube or at a funeral.

3) Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
In one of those rare moments for me when I like the verse more than the chorus this song is deliciously haunting and ...um...I happened to discover it as recently as 2011. Sue me.

4) Feeling Good - Nina Simone
This song has a special place in my otherwise quite hollow heart. No matter what mood I'm in Nina manages to life me up with her out of this world voice. The song is so good I even have the Muse and Buble versions.
How can you not let an involuntary shiver run up your spine at the line "Breeeeeze drifting on by, you know how I feel". Quick, get me a shawl.

5) Many Moons - Janelle Monae
This track (and video! Are we allowed videos on the island?) sums up nicely the kind of song i can listen to on a loop. It has an awesome beat, fantastic lyrics that tell the story of Cindi Mayweather, an android fulfilling her destiny on planet Metropolis and a tonne of random words midway that appear to be random but are far from, meaning you'll take at least 2 years to memorise the verse.
Check out her dancing in the video...no seriously, check it out.

6) Orinoco Flow - Enya
I'm on an island and you thought I wouldn't include this song?! In another universe I just know Enya is my mum and we're living in Swaziland. I have had this song on every holiday playlist. The song has traveled with me everywhere and if ever I have a child, it will be played during my labour.

7) Summertime Sadness - Lana Del Rey
Whatever people may say of Lana as an artist, her voice and her lyrics really are something. I saw her live in 2012 and fell in love with her on the spot, her voice is highly emotive and this particular song has a cinematic quality to it. Besides, I usually suffer from summertime sadness

8) La Bamba - Ritchie Valens
Another song that I can't help shaking my non-existent hips to. I am yet to watch the 1987 film of the same name but I'm saving it for an awesome day. I know not a word of Spanish but just one listen of this song and I can convince myself otherwise.

9) Stare into the sun - Grafitti6
This group aren't very well known but after discovering them back in 2009 I have been an avid fan. A man singing about heartbreak in a high voice and with an upbeat tempo? Heaven!

10) Clocks - Coldplay
I have an obsession with the concept of Time so this song fits aptly into my world. Chris Martin is a genius song writer most days but this song stands out because it is filled with contradictions, much like my life. Oh yeah and that piano melody alone is pure heaven.
